Privacy Policy

Browsing Sailor's Reality needs no account. To contribute a report you sign in once with Google or an email address, so we can keep reports genuine and prevent the same person flooding a company page. Your identity is never shown next to your report, never shown to other users, and never sold or shared.

When you sign in we receive and store your email address, an account identifier, and — if you use Google — the basic profile information Google returns for sign-in. We use this only to authenticate you, to apply our contribution limits, to let you manage or delete your own reports, and to act on abuse.

We do not ask for your name, phone number, seafarer documents, or employer details, and we do not publish your account information anywhere on the site.

When you contribute a report about a company, you may share details such as salary ranges, promotion timelines, relief reliability, work culture, food experience, overtime practices, crew nationality mix, internet quality and general onboard experience, along with your rank, fleet type and an approximate time period.

This information is about a company and a voyage experience — not about you as an identifiable person. Please do not include your own name, the names of crew members, contact details, or any other information that could identify a specific individual. If you do, you are sharing it voluntarily and it may become publicly visible.

Reports are published anonymously: no name, email, profile photo, avatar or account identifier is ever attached to a report shown on the site, in our public data, or to connected apps and agents. Other users cannot tell who wrote a report or link two reports to the same person.

Internally, each new report is linked to the account that submitted it. That link exists solely to enforce our one-report-per-company-per-six-months rule, to let you edit or delete your own reports, and to act on abuse. Access is restricted to platform administrators. Reports submitted before contributor accounts existed have no owner at all.

Suggestions sent through the "Suggest an improvement" feature need no account and are stored separately from company reports.

To stop the same person posting repeatedly about one company, we keep a separate, private waiting record for each company you report on. This record does not contain your email address, your name or anything readable about you. Instead it stores a one-way cryptographic fingerprint derived from your verified sign-in email using a secret key we hold. The fingerprint cannot be reversed back into an email address, is never exposed to the website, to other users, to our public data or to connected apps, and is used for nothing except enforcing the six-month rule.

Because it is a fraud- and abuse-prevention measure, this fingerprint survives deleting a report and deleting your account: creating a new account with the same verified email does not reset a waiting period that has not yet elapsed. Each record carries an expiry date six months after the report it relates to, and is deleted automatically once that date passes and its abuse-prevention purpose has ended.

Reports can only be posted from a confirmed email address. Confirming your address (or signing in with Google, which is already verified) is what makes this safeguard work.

Like most websites and apps, our hosting and security infrastructure may automatically process limited technical information when you connect, including your IP address, browser or app version, device type and operating system, and the pages you request. This is used to keep the service running, prevent abuse and spam, and diagnose errors. We do not use it to identify you personally.

We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. We may use essential browser local storage to keep the app working smoothly (for example, remembering a draft or a basic preference). The Android app wraps the same website and behaves the same way. When you sign in — as a contributor or as an administrator — a secure session token is stored in your browser so you stay signed in until you sign out.

We may use privacy-respecting, aggregate analytics to understand how many people use the platform and which features are helpful. Any such analytics are measured in aggregate and are not used to identify individual seafarers or sell data to third parties.

We use the information described above to publish anonymous company insights, calculate aggregate statistics and dataset maturity levels, authenticate contributors, enforce contribution limits, moderate content and prevent spam, maintain security, and improve the platform. We do not sell your data, and we do not share it for advertising.

Company reports are retained so they remain useful to other seafarers over time, and may be removed or hidden by moderators if they are inaccurate, abusive, or violate our Terms of Use. Technical logs used for security are kept only as long as needed for that purpose. Account details are kept while your account exists, and are erased when you delete it. The pseudonymous waiting-record fingerprint described above is kept only until the related six-month period expires.

If you have an account, you are in control. Open Your account → My contributions to see every report you have submitted and delete any of them yourself. Deleting a report removes it from company pages and from community statistics. It does not reset the six-month waiting period for that company.

You can delete your entire account from Your account → Delete my account. This permanently erases your sign-in details and account identifier. Reports you already shared remain on the site as ordinary anonymous community data, permanently detached from you, so company pages stay useful to other crew — delete any reports you want removed before deleting your account. Once your account is gone, those detached reports can no longer be edited or deleted from the app, so please review them first.

Deleting your account does not clear the six-month waiting records described above. They contain no readable identity information, only the one-way fingerprint, and they expire on their own.

You can also request account deletion by emailing sailorsreality@gmail.com from the address you signed in with.

To request removal of community-submitted content, email sailorsreality@gmail.com and include enough detail for us to find the specific report — for example, the company name, the rank or fleet mentioned, the approximate date it was posted, or a link to the page. We review every request and will remove or hide content that is inaccurate, abusive, contains personal information, or otherwise violates our Terms of Use. We aim to respond within 30 days.

You can also flag any report directly on a company page using the Report content button, which sends it to our moderators for review.

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, or request deletion of personal data we hold about you. The personal data we hold is limited to your sign-in email address, account identifier and basic sign-in profile information. You can delete all of it yourself from your account page, or contact us at sailorsreality@gmail.com to request access, correction or deletion. The one-way waiting-record fingerprint is retained for abuse prevention for up to six months after a report, as described above.

Sailor's Reality is intended for working seafarers and professionals and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 16. If you believe a minor has submitted information, contact us and we will remove it.

Sailor's Reality serves a global maritime community. By using the platform you understand that anonymous, non-personal content may be stored and processed on servers located outside your country. We apply the same privacy standards regardless of where you connect from.

We may update this policy as the platform evolves or as regulations change. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of Sailor's Reality after changes means you accept the revised policy.
